Transgender Pride Commemorative Flag Displayed for First Time Above Tacoma Dome and Other City Facilities

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma has made a significant statement by raising the Transgender Pride commemorative flag for the first time above the Tacoma Dome and other key city facilities on March 31, marking Transgender Day of Visibility. Council Member Olgy Diaz underscored the importance of this day as a moment to celebrate the joy and resilience of the transgender community, advocating for visibility and support. Mayor Victoria Woodards affirmed that the flag’s display represents Tacoma's dedication to inclusion and safety for all its residents. This initiative follows the recent adoption of Resolution 41642, which mandates a clear process for the display of commemorative flags at city-owned facilities. Oliver Webb, Executive Director of the Diversity Alliance of the Puget Sound, emphasized the critical role of visibility, especially in a climate where transgender individuals often face significant challenges.

The display of the flags serves as a reminder of the strength and contributions of the transgender community to Tacoma's rich diversity. The flags were provided by local community partners at no cost, reflecting a collaborative spirit in promoting acceptance. This historic flag-raising event serves as a call for solidarity and support for the transgender community, encouraging all residents to stand together in celebration and affirmation.
