County proclaims Billy Frank, Jr. Day

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Pierce County Council took time on March 11 to honor Billy Frank Jr. by proclaiming March 9 as "Billy Frank Jr. Day," in celebration of his legacy and contributions. The proclamation, read by Council member Paul Hererra, emphasizes Frank's dedication to protecting ancestral lands and advocating for salmon populations vital to the Nisqually people. It calls on the community to engage with and learn about the rich Tribal history of Puget Sound.

Frank was a key figure in the "Fishing Wars," which highlighted the struggle for Native American treaty rights and resulted in a significant legal battle against Washington State. His long-standing role as Chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission showcases his influence and commitment to environmental stewardship. Nancy Shippentower, Frank's niece, poignantly recalled how salmon were integral to their way of life and identity. She praised her uncle's environmental advocacy, which underscored the importance of preserving their culture. The proclamation serves as a reminder of Frank's enduring impact on both the local community and broader environmental issues.
