TAC welcomes sportswriter John McGrath

Tacoma, WALocal News

On April 10, the Tacoma-Pierce Athletic Commission will host a luncheon featuring the esteemed sportswriter John McGrath at Cheney Stadium’s Summit Room. Known locally for his impactful 40-year career as a sports columnist for the News Tribune, McGrath shared his journey from covering major sporting events to navigating retirement. His retirement in 2018 was not by choice; he was affected by downsizing in the media industry. Shortly after leaving, a serious health scare forced him to confront his mortality, as doctors informed him he had only six months to live. However, after a surprising recovery, McGrath adopted a new outlook on life, embracing experiences he previously overlooked, such as auditioning for a play.

His story also includes a near-fatal accident involving a truck, which further shaped his appreciation for daily joys. McGrath’s reflections on the changing nature of sports journalism underscore the diminishing role of traditional sports columnists. His journey serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of cherishing each moment.
