Council receives homeless strategy update

The Tacoma City Council's March 18 study session highlighted progress in the city's strategy to combat homelessness, with Caleb Carbone presenting vital updates. A significant focus is the Tacoma Rescue Mission's men's shelter expansion, with plans for funding approval in April. In addition, the city has launched a Street Medicine pilot project, receiving $1 million from the Health Care Authority for healthcare access improvements through June 2025. Tacoma's commitment to permanent supportive housing is evident in its $2. 24 million investment, aimed at stabilizing individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

This funding is sourced from a one-tenth of 1 cent sales tax, as supported by House Bill 1590. Noteworthy housing initiatives include the Shiloh New Life Apartments and Heron Apartments, both backed by state funding. The city's proactive response to inclement weather has provided shelter for 42 days this year, showcasing its dedication to emergency support. Carbone emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making in addressing homelessness, highlighting ongoing efforts to understand trends through Pierce County’s Point in Time Count.
