County developing homeless housing plan

Tacoma, WALocal News

Pierce County is taking significant steps to address homelessness by developing a new five-year housing plan, as mandated by the Washington State Department of Commerce. This strategic initiative aims to align local efforts with state goals and provide a comprehensive framework for tackling homelessness in the region. A core team composed of service providers, elected officials, and community advocates will guide the plan's development, ensuring diverse perspectives are included. Beginning this spring and extending through 2025, outreach events will invite residents to share their experiences and recommendations. Emphasizing equity and accountability, the plan recognizes the unique challenges faced by historically marginalized communities, including Black and African American households and LGBTQ2S+ individuals.

Additionally, Pierce County plans to amend its Comprehensive Plan to End Homelessness to comply with state requirements, with a target adoption by year-end. This collaborative approach is designed to enhance the effectiveness of the homeless crisis response system in the area.
