City votes to prioritize seniors

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council has made a notable commitment to inclusivity by prioritizing the involvement of seniors in city governance. On March 4, the council unanimously voted to enhance the representation of community members aged 65 and older on the City of Tacoma’s Committees, Boards, and Commissions. This resolution, led by Council Member John Hines, responds to the pressing need for senior voices in policy-making as the city’s aging population continues to grow. Hines highlighted the unique challenges faced by seniors, particularly concerning mobility, connectivity, and safety, and called for their perspectives to be integral to the city’s decision-making processes. The resolution is co-sponsored by fellow council members Joe Bushnell, Sarah Rumbaugh, and Sandesh Sadalge, reinforcing a collaborative effort to foster a more inclusive environment.

By ensuring that senior representation is considered during the recruitment of new committee members, Tacoma aims to build a vibrant community for residents of all ages. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create a city that supports everyone, emphasizing the importance of engaging older citizens in shaping future policies. With more than a dozen committees in place, this step is seen as crucial for gathering diverse insights and recommendations that reflect the city's demographic changes.
