Public Safety Building passes milestone

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Public Safety Building project in Puyallup has marked a significant milestone by completing its design phase, gearing up for construction later this year. After a bond measure failed in November 2023, the City reassessed its approach and decided to lease space at the Benaroya South Hill Business & Technology Center, addressing the urgent need for a modern facility. The City Council has authorized a 30-year lease of 54,000 square feet at an annual cost of $3 million, alongside $25 million allocated for tenant improvements. Chief Scott Engle highlighted that this strategy is projected to save the City $30 million over 30 years compared to constructing a new building. Funding will be sourced from councilmanic bonds, which the City will repay through its general fund, thus alleviating financial strain on residents.

The new facility promises to enhance operational efficiency by providing sufficient space for officers, interview rooms, and secure parking. Engle stated that the current building has been inadequate for the growing police department, which has not had a suitable workspace for decades. This project represents a significant investment in community safety and resource management, reflecting effective stewardship of tax dollars.
