Council Member Olgy Diaz Passes Resolution 41378 to Support Access to Phone Services for Detainees in the Northwest ICE Processing Center

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council's recent passage of Resolution 41378 marks a significant step towards supporting the rights of detainees at the Northwest ICE Processing Center (NWIPC) by allocating $10,000 for phone services. This initiative, backed by Council Member Olgy Diaz and co-sponsors, aims to provide essential communication for up to 105 low-income detainees who often face isolation and lack legal representation. The Advocates for Immigrants in Detention Northwest (AIDNW) will utilize these funds to distribute phone credits, allowing detainees to connect with family and legal advocates. Diaz highlighted the dire need for basic human rights for detainees, emphasizing the emotional toll of their isolation. AIDNW Executive Director Deborah Cruz stated that communication serves as a lifeline, restoring dignity and hope for those detained.

This resolution not only addresses immediate needs but also reflects the broader community's commitment to advocating for systemic immigration reform. AIDNW, a non-profit organization, plays a crucial role in assisting detained immigrants and raising awareness of their challenges. The phone fund program is a vital resource, enabling detainees to maintain connections that can significantly impact their mental health and legal outcomes.
