TPD plan ends with crime reduction

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council received a pivotal update on the police department's Violent Crime Reduction Plan during their study session on February 26, detailing impressive decreases in violent crime rates for the latter half of 2024. Assistant Chief Crystal Young-Haskins and Dr. Michael Smith reported a 13% reduction in violent crime, including serious offenses like robbery and murder, compared to the same period in 2022. Notably, violent crime victimization decreased by 23% in the last six months of 2024. Strategies implemented, such as police visibility in hotspots and proactive foot patrols, yielded significant results, with a 41% reduction in violent crime in areas where officers engaged directly with the community.

Smith noted an uptick in arrests, particularly for minor infractions and drug offenses, while violent crime arrests decreased by 6%, aligning with the plan's objectives. The council recognized the positive impact of these initiatives, despite a slight increase in crime in surrounding areas, known as "catchment area grids. " Overall, the report reflects the successful implementation of a community-focused approach to policing, fostering a safer environment for Tacoma residents. The findings underscore the importance of sustained efforts in crime reduction strategies for long-term community safety.
