Best athletes to be honored at Spring Athlete of the Year

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma-Pierce County Athletic Commission is set to honor the region's top high school athletes at the 2025 Spring Athlete of the Year luncheon on March 13, 2025. This annual event will focus exclusively on winter sports, with 28 state champions in boys and girls wrestling being recognized. Taking place at the McGavick Conference Center, the luncheon invites community members to celebrate the achievements of local athletes. Each sport's nominations are carefully evaluated by a dedicated committee, which includes experienced TAC members like Willie Stewart, who has over 50 years of service. Stewart explained the detailed selection process that ensures deserving athletes are honored based on nominations from their schools.

In addition to wrestling champions, awards will also be presented to the top male and female athletes in basketball and bowling. The event aims to foster community spirit and highlight the positive impact of youth sports, countering negative perceptions of young people. With 30 high schools participating in this year's nominations, the commission encourages wider involvement in the future.
