Local Integration and Best Use Will Drive Design of Amtrak Station

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma has taken significant steps to ensure local representation in the design of a new Amtrak station in the Dome District. Council Member Robert Thoms, alongside a local architect, is spearheading efforts to integrate community feedback into the project's planning. After initial meetings revealed a need for a stronger Tacoma voice in the design process, Thoms met with WSDOT leaders to push for local input. The collaboration will involve community forums, the first of which is scheduled for January 23, 2014, to gather further public engagement. Dome District Association President Janice McNeal expressed that this agreement is a considerable victory for local stakeholders, underscoring the importance of tailoring the station to meet community needs.

Thoms highlighted the complexities of the transit-oriented district and the necessity of protecting existing investments. The City of Tacoma is committed to working closely with WSDOT to create architectural renderings that will benefit both Freighthouse Square and the Dome District. This initiative showcases Tacoma's dedication to ensuring that local voices are integral to urban development projects.
