Mayor Marilyn Strickland has initiated a Commission on International Relations to enhance Tacoma’s global engagement and economic prospects. This newly formed commission is tasked with developing a strategic agenda that emphasizes education, the arts, tourism, and economic growth. It includes diverse representatives from organizations such as the Port of Tacoma, Travel Tacoma, and the Sister Cities Council, all committed to improving Tacoma's international relations. Strickland noted the potential for increased collaboration among local businesses and organizations to elevate Tacoma’s status as a significant international port city. Clare Petrich, a member of the commission, expressed a collective desire to move beyond Tacoma being a "best kept secret" and to attract more international visitors and investments.

The commission's first meeting took place on October 2, 2014, signaling the start of its efforts to promote Tacoma on a global scale. As North America's third-largest trade gateway, Tacoma has much to offer, and the commission aims to leverage this advantage. The establishment of this commission represents a proactive approach to fostering international connections and economic opportunities for the city.
