City of Tacomas Environmental Services Solid Waste Utility Awarded More Than 2.5 Million in Grants from the EPA and the Washington State Department of Ecology

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma, Washington, has been awarded over $2. 5 million in grants from both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Washington State Department of Ecology, highlighting the city's commitment to environmental sustainability. The largest portion of this funding, amounting to $1,999,806, will be used to expand the nationally recognized Community Ambassador Program, focused on equitable education and outreach about recycling and composting. This effort supports the EPA's Recycling Education and Outreach Grant Program, which aims to enhance public understanding of recycling initiatives. The city was selected as one of only 25 recipients from over 300 applicants, underscoring the competitive nature of the grant process.

Furthermore, a $560,196 grant will facilitate the transition from an aging diesel solid waste truck to a state-of-the-art battery electric garbage truck, significantly reducing air pollution. Mayor Victoria Woodards and Deputy Mayor Kristina Walker praised the Environmental Services Department for its leadership in sustainable practices and its proactive approach to community engagement. These initiatives not only address local waste management challenges but also align with Tacoma's broader climate action goals. The city's efforts illustrate a strong commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting a greener future.
