Equity in Action Case Studies Showcase the City of Tacomas Successes and Positive Progress Using Equity Index

Tacoma, WALocal News

During a recent City Council study session, Tacoma launched "Equity in Action," a collection of 21 case studies demonstrating the effectiveness of its Equity Index, established in 2018. This interactive mapping tool has played a crucial role in guiding city departments and community partners to make informed decisions that foster equity across Tacoma's diverse demographics. Mayor Victoria Woodards highlighted the inspirational nature of these case studies, aiming to inspire local leaders and provide a scalable model for other jurisdictions. The presentation included updates on enhancements to the Equity Index, focusing on a more user-friendly experience and additional data sets. The initiative has been recognized nationally, receiving the Luminary Award from the New Growth Innovation Network for its significant contribution to inclusive economic growth.

Betsey Suchanic, an advisor at NGIN, praised Tacoma's commitment to integrating equity into decision-making processes, which has become evident in city legislation. This collection serves as a resource for city staff and civic leaders, reinforcing Tacoma's commitment to advancing equity and opportunity for historically marginalized communities.
