City of Tacoma Joins Forests in Cities Network to Promote Health and Sustainability of Tacomas Natural Areas

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma is excited to announce its membership in the Forests in Cities network, a significant initiative by the Natural Areas Conservancy focused on urban forest health and sustainability. By joining this network, Tacoma gains access to a wealth of resources, including training and research opportunities, essential for managing its expansive 500 acres of passive open spaces. These natural areas play a critical role in stormwater retention, air and water quality improvements, and climate change adaptation—factors increasingly vital as the city experiences rapid population growth. Mayor Victoria Woodards emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in overcoming environmental challenges facing urban areas. Joining this network also allows Tacoma to leverage the expertise of Dr.

Joey Hulbert from Washington State University, who will help engage local communities in maintaining forest health. This initiative not only supports the ecological balance of Tacoma's urban environment but also enriches the quality of life for its residents. The partnership aims to create a thriving urban forest ecosystem that benefits both the community and the environment.
