City Council Votes to Purchase 2.27 Acres to Facilitate Future Construction of a New Fire Station 7 and Enhance Emergency Response Capabilities

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council's recent decision to purchase 2. 27 acres for a new Fire Station 7 marks a pivotal advancement in the city's emergency response capabilities. The unanimous vote, amounting to $870,000, supports a strategic plan to improve public safety infrastructure in a growing community. Following a 2023 facilities needs assessment, it was determined that the existing Fire Station 7 on South Warner Street is severely undersized and unable to accommodate necessary expansions. Mayor Victoria Woodards emphasized the importance of this acquisition for enhancing the safety and preparedness of Tacoma's residents.

Council Member Joe Bushnell pointed out the current station's high call volume, which exceeds 3,500 emergencies annually, impacting response times. The new site, located near existing park infrastructure, will also serve as a crisis command center during natural disasters. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort between city officials and Metro Parks, ensuring community engagement in the planning process. The relocation of Fire Station 7 is expected to provide more equitable service delivery for all Tacoma residents.
