Tacoma Police Departments Answers to ShotSpotter FAQs
The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) is set to implement ShotSpotter technology, following an $800,000 grant from the Federal Department of Justice aimed at reducing gun violence in Tacoma. This pilot program will allow TPD to quickly identify the locations of gunfire, which is expected to enhance response times and improve the effectiveness of investigations. In addition to ShotSpotter, the grant will fund the adoption of advanced latent fingerprint technology and a FARO Focus 3D Laser Scanner for better crime scene documentation. The initial focus will be on a two-square-mile area in South Hosmer Street, identified as having a high violent crime rate. TPD emphasizes that the technology will not significantly alter 911 call volumes, as community members typically report gunfire incidents.
Addressing concerns about over-policing, TPD states that ShotSpotter provides a more targeted approach to responding to gunshot incidents, enhancing situational awareness for officers. The initiative is designed to complement the existing Violent Crime Reduction Plan, leveraging data to inform police operations. Ultimately, TPD aims to bolster community safety and trust while addressing gun violence effectively.
