Letters of Interest Due July 8 at Noon to Serve on Fire Levy Ballot Measure For and Against Committees

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma is calling for volunteers to participate in committees that will craft statements for and against Proposition No. 1, a proposed property tax levy increase aimed at bolstering the Tacoma Fire Department's resources. The City Council adopted this measure on June 18, 2024, and it will be included on the ballot for the upcoming General Election on November 5, 2024. This levy increase, set at $0. 65 per $1,000 of assessed value, is designed to enhance the fire department’s facilities, fleet, and staffing, thus improving both firefighter safety and community response times.

Notably, exemptions are available for seniors, veterans, and other qualifying individuals as per state regulations. Community members interested in serving on these committees must submit their letters of interest by noon on July 8, 2024, highlighting their advocacy stance, residency, and motivation for participation. The statements from these committees will be featured in the official voters’ pamphlet, ensuring that voters have a comprehensive understanding of the measure. For further inquiries about the ballot measure or the application process, individuals can contact the City Clerk’s Office directly. This initiative represents an essential step in enhancing public safety and community engagement in Tacoma.
