City of Tacoma Receives 1.94M to Support Residential Transition from Fossil Fuels to Clean, Energy-Efficient Appliances

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma has secured $1. 94 million from the Washington State Department of Commerce to facilitate the transition from fossil fuel appliances to clean, energy-efficient electric alternatives through the Home Electrification Appliance Rebates (HEAR) program. Funded by the Climate Commitment Act, this initiative targets income-constrained residents, helping them to adopt electric heating solutions such as heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. Mayor Victoria Woodards highlighted that this transition aligns with Tacoma's vision of becoming a safe and affordable clean energy city. The program is designed to reduce energy and heating costs while improving indoor air quality, thus contributing to better health outcomes for residents.

With building-related emissions being a significant source of greenhouse gases in Washington, this initiative is crucial in addressing climate change and promoting sustainability. Commerce Director Mike Fong noted that investing in electrification offers communities a chance to create healthier, more resilient homes. Tacoma Power customers will receive information on accessing these new appliances starting in early fall 2024.
