Tacomas District 2 to Decide How to Spend 1 Million Toward Community Enhancement and Investment in Public Infrastructure

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's District 2 is set to empower its residents by opening a voting period for community members to allocate $1 million towards local enhancement projects, lasting until September 20, 2024. The three proposals under consideration include designing a covered skate park adorned with public art, funding youth programming for a new dedicated teen area at the Tacoma Public Library, and upgrading the emergency shelter on Puyallup Avenue with essential facilities. Mayor Victoria Woodards underscores the value of participatory budgeting in reflecting community needs and fostering direct engagement with local governance. District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh expresses her admiration for the active involvement of residents, especially the youth, in shaping these proposals. This process not only encourages civic participation but also aims to improve the quality of life in the community.

As the city continues to prioritize resident input, District 3 will soon embark on its own participatory budgeting initiative this fall. The city’s Participatory Budgeting Program aims to strengthen community ties and enhance public infrastructure. More details can be found at cityoftacoma. org/PBTacoma.
