Equity in Action Case Studies Showcase the City of Tacomas Successes and Positive Progress Using Equity Index

Tacoma, WALocal News

During a recent City Council study session, Tacoma's Office of Strategy introduced "Equity in Action," a collection of case studies that highlight the effective use of the Equity Index in promoting equitable outcomes in the city. This comprehensive resource features 21 examples of how city departments and community partners have made data-informed decisions to address inequities since the Equity Index's launch in 2018. Mayor Victoria Woodards emphasized the collection's role as a motivational tool for local stakeholders and a blueprint for other communities seeking to implement similar equity strategies. The presentation also included updates on technical enhancements to the Equity Index, aimed at improving user experience and accessibility to data. The recognition of the Equity Index with the Luminary Award from the New Growth Innovation Network reflects its significant role in advancing inclusive economic growth in Tacoma.

According to NGIN Inclusive Economic Development Advisor Betsey Suchanic, the integration of equity into decision-making processes is commendable. This initiative not only aims to improve conditions for historically marginalized communities but also serves as a model for other cities. The case studies and updates position Tacoma as a leader in operationalizing equity and pursuing antiracist objectives.
