Public Hearing Regarding Proposed Moratorium Extension for South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District on August 13

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council is set to hold a public hearing on August 13 to consider extending a moratorium on high-impact uses in the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District (STGPD). This hearing will occur during the City Council meeting, starting no earlier than 5:15 PM, and will provide both in-person and virtual participation options for community members. Initially implemented in March 2023, the moratorium currently restricts the development or expansion of underground storage tanks and metal recycling or auto wrecking facilities in the STGPD. If approved, the moratorium extension will add another six months to these prohibitions, lasting until the completion of a code update anticipated in 2025. Community engagement is encouraged, with written comments due to the City Clerk's Office by 5 PM on August 12.

Detailed information regarding the hearing and submission guidelines is available on the City of Tacoma's website. This initiative emphasizes the city's commitment to protecting groundwater resources and ensuring sustainable development practices. Residents are urged to participate in the discussion about these critical environmental protections.
