City Council Approves Honorary Street Renaming for Beloved Community Leader Bill Evans

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council has unanimously approved the honorary renaming of North 27th Street to “Bill Evans Place” in honor of a beloved community leader and former City Council member. This decision, made on August 6, 2024, recognizes Evans' vital role in advocating for walkable urban spaces and supporting small businesses within the Proctor District. The community will celebrate this honor during the Proctor Farmers’ Market's 30th Anniversary on August 24, 2024, from 10 to 10:45 AM. Mayor Victoria Woodards highlighted Evans' lasting impact on Tacoma, citing his efforts in preserving local landmarks and enhancing community spaces. Deputy Mayor John Hines echoed these sentiments, noting that Evans' vision for neighborhood centers has contributed significantly to the vibrancy of Proctor today.

The honorary street naming will be effective for 15 years, allowing both new and longtime residents to learn about Evans' contributions. The city’s policy mandates community outreach for such proposals, and Evans’ renaming initiative surpassed the required support from property owners. This recognition ensures that Evans’ legacy inspires future generations to engage with their communities.
