City of Tacoma Joins Forests in Cities Network to Promote Health and Sustainability of Tacomas Natural Areas
The City of Tacoma has proudly joined the Forests in Cities network, an initiative by the Natural Areas Conservancy focused on promoting the health and sustainability of urban natural areas. This network includes representatives from 21 cities across the U. S. and partners like the USDA Forest Service, offering Tacoma access to invaluable resources and research opportunities. Mayor Victoria Woodards stated the importance of innovation and collaborative efforts to tackle environmental challenges resulting from the city's rapid population growth.
Tacoma oversees more than 500 acres of passive open spaces, which play a crucial role in stormwater retention, air quality enhancement, and climate change adaptation. Dr. Joey Hulbert from Washington State University will engage local communities as part of the Forests in Cities team, leveraging his expertise from the Forest Health Watch program. This partnership will significantly strengthen Tacoma's urban forest management initiatives, fostering a sustainable urban ecosystem. Community members are encouraged to explore Tacoma’s Passive Open Space Program for more information.
The efforts reflect a collective commitment to preserving the ecological balance in a growing urban environment.
