Tacoma, WALocal News

On October 15, the Tacoma City Council approved a funding allocation of $35,000 for a Pride-themed decorative crosswalk on Broadway, aiming to boost visibility for the LGBTQIA2+ community. Council Member Olgy Diaz, Tacoma's first out queer female council member, expressed the project's significance, noting that it fulfills a long-standing request from the community for increased representation. The crosswalk will be situated in a vibrant downtown area, adjacent to schools, theaters, and public parks, thereby inviting engagement from residents and tourists. Council Member Kristina Walker highlighted the crosswalk as a symbol of Tacoma's commitment to inclusivity and community connection. The design process will involve collaboration between the Public Works Department and the city's Arts Program, ensuring the inclusion of diverse Pride flag elements.

Additionally, the crosswalk will utilize durable plastic materials to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance. The city aims to complete the installation ahead of Pride Month in July 2025, celebrating Tacoma's rich history of inclusivity. This initiative not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of downtown Tacoma but also serves as a focal point for fostering dialogue and love within the community.
