City Prepares to Expand Winter Weather Shelter Capacity

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma is preparing to enhance its winter weather shelter capacity to support individuals experiencing homelessness from November 15, 2024, to March 31, 2025. The seasonal shelter, situated at 813 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, will offer overnight accommodations for up to 53 adults, alongside vital resources such as meals and access to employment and mental health services. Referrals for shelter will be accepted from other locations that are at capacity, as well as from the City’s Homeless Engagement and Alternatives Liaison (HEAL) team and various outreach teams throughout Tacoma. In response to severe weather conditions, additional shelter options will be available, including 20 extra beds for adults and young adults, as well as hotel vouchers for families needing immediate assistance.

A community discussion on the operations of these shelters is scheduled for November 14, providing residents with an opportunity to engage with city officials. This initiative underscores Tacoma's proactive approach to combatting homelessness and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive the support they need during harsh winter months. For more information about the city's inclement weather shelter and available resources, residents can visit the city’s website. Tacoma’s commitment to addressing homelessness is critical in fostering a supportive community environment.
