10,000 in Grant Funding Secured to Accelerate Planning Phase of Workforce Development Hub and Childcare Facility in Tacomas East Side

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's Mayor Victoria Woodards has successfully secured $10,000 in grant funding from the U. S. Conference of Mayors to fast-track the planning phase of a workforce development hub and childcare facility on Tacoma's East Side. This initiative, led by the Pierce County Labor Community Services Agency, seeks to convert the former Willard Elementary School into a dual-purpose facility that addresses the critical needs for affordable childcare and skilled labor. By co-locating 24-hour childcare services with apprenticeship training programs, the project aims to remove employment barriers for working families, especially those in non-traditional jobs.

Mayor Woodards described the project as a "game-changer," emphasizing its potential to provide vital resources and opportunities for economic mobility. The grant will facilitate the creation of a detailed business plan, baseline data collection, and facility design, which includes strategies for sustainability and community involvement. Furthermore, the initiative will provide training pathways for aspiring childcare professionals, enhancing workforce capacity in this critical sector. The collaborative effort showcases Tacoma's commitment to addressing complex social challenges through innovative solutions. The project is expected to make a significant impact on the local economy and community well-being.
