Tanja Carter has been named the new Community & Economic Development Director for Tacoma, effective March 24, 2025, following her appointment by City Manager Elizabeth Pauli and confirmation by the City Council. With a robust background in economic development, Carter previously held the position of Economic Development Director for the City of Federal Way, where she honed her skills in various sectors including tourism, commercial real estate, and international manufacturing. As a trilingual professional who has lived on three continents and worked in over 60 countries, she brings a diverse and global perspective to the role. Carter aims to foster local economic growth by supporting small businesses, particularly those owned by immigrants, through tailored strategies that address their unique challenges. Her established connections with organizations such as the International Economic Development Council and the Washington Economic Development Association will be instrumental in her efforts.
