City of Tacoma Invests 800,000 to Expand Youth and Cultural Programming in District 4
The City of Tacoma is investing $800,000 to expand youth and cultural programming in District 4, a move that reflects the desires of over 12,000 residents who participated in a participatory budgeting process. This funding is strategically allocated, with $400,000 designated for cultural programming and another $400,000 for youth programming, focusing on organizations that serve children and teenagers aged 4-18. Council Member Sandesh Sadalge highlighted the importance of this initiative in recognizing Tacoma's rich cultural tapestry, while also paying tribute to the late Council Member Catherine Ushka for her tireless advocacy for the district. The Foundation for Tacoma Students will oversee the Request for Proposals (RFP) process, ensuring that community-driven needs shape funding decisions. Eligible organizations include nonprofits, community groups, educational institutions, and more, fostering a collaborative approach to enhancing youth experiences.
A virtual information session will take place on February 28, 2025, providing guidance for interested organizations, with proposals due by April 1. This initiative aims to create supportive environments where youth can thrive, explore their interests, and connect with their cultural heritage. By empowering local organizations, Tacoma is strengthening its commitment to nurturing the next generation.
