Home in Tacoma FAQ - October 2024

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Home in Tacoma initiative is a comprehensive effort to modify zoning regulations aimed at increasing housing supply, affordability, and choice to accommodate the city’s rapidly growing population. Launched by the City Council in December 2021, the project has involved significant community engagement and Planning Commission review throughout 2023 and early 2024. As of October 22, 2024, the City Council is evaluating 15 proposed amendments that address critical areas such as zoning maps, parking regulations, and landscaping requirements. The public hearing held on September 24 provided a platform for community members to voice their opinions, shaping the council's deliberations. Notably, the Planning Commission's recommendations included 22 amendments that focus on creating new Urban Residential zones and implementing reduced parking areas.

The upcoming council meetings will be crucial in determining the final shape of the Home in Tacoma package, with the first reading of the ordinance scheduled for October 29, 2024. After further deliberation, a final reading is expected on November 19, 2024, potentially leading to an effective date of February 1, 2025. As Tacoma strives to meet state mandates and align with its Comprehensive Plan, this initiative represents a significant step toward addressing the city's housing challenges.
