The City of Tacoma has publicly acknowledged the not guilty verdicts rendered for Officers Burbank, Collins, and Rankine in the case concerning the death of Mr. Ellis, recognizing the emotional toll this has taken on the community. In light of the verdicts, city officials stress their commitment to accountability and the need for ongoing transformation within the Tacoma Police Department (TPD). Despite the conclusion of the criminal trial, TPD's internal investigation into the officers' actions on March 3, 2020, is set to continue, focusing on potential violations of use of force and courtesy standards. Chief Avery Moore will evaluate the internal investigation's findings and decide on any disciplinary actions within 10 business days, with public disclosure of those decisions to follow.

The city emphasizes that no verdict can reverse the tragedy of Mr. Ellis's death, yet it is dedicated to building a transparent and just public safety model. Tacoma's leaders aim to bridge the divide within the community through continued efforts to enhance trust in law enforcement.
