New International Regulations to Affect Recycling in Tacoma

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma's recycling program is undergoing significant changes due to new international regulations that demand higher quality standards for recyclables, primarily impacting materials sent to Asia. The Tacoma City Council has unanimously passed Ordinance 28623, which introduces a monthly surcharge of $2. 32 for residential customers to offset the increased costs of recycling and enhance educational resources for proper waste disposal. As part of these changes, curbside glass collection will be discontinued, and residents will have access to satellite recycling centers for glass disposal anticipated in mid-2020. The city is also removing items like shredded paper and plastic bags from the curbside recycling list to comply with stricter contamination guidelines.

This shift underscores the importance of clean recyclables, as contaminated materials lead to higher rejection rates and costs. Residents eligible for affordability assistance programs will not have to pay the surcharge, ensuring continued access to recycling services for low-income households. The ordinance reflects a proactive approach to adapting Tacoma's recycling efforts amid evolving global standards and emphasizes community education regarding proper recycling practices. With these adjustments, Tacoma aims to maintain a sustainable recycling program while aligning with international demands.
