Tacoma Schools marks an historic first

Tacoma Public Schools has marked a historic milestone with the election of Korey Strozier and Chelsea McElroy as the first Black president and vice president of the Board of Directors. Strozier, who joined the Board in 2020, highlighted the significance of representation, emphasizing that diverse leadership can inspire students to pursue leadership roles themselves. The Board's primary goal this year is to develop and implement a strategic plan that prioritizes student-centered policies, ensuring educational equity throughout the district. McElroy, who has served since 2021, expressed her pride in her new position, noting her family's legacy of integrating Tacoma schools. She shared her personal connection to the district's history, acknowledging her parents' struggles during integration.

Together, Strozier and McElroy aim to foster strong relationships between the Board, district leadership, and the community. Their leadership represents a commitment to advocacy for equitable access to education, which is crucial for a diverse student population. This achievement not only reflects progress within Tacoma Public Schools but also serves as a beacon of hope for future generations.
