County committees add live streaming

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Pierce County Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing public engagement by live-streaming its committee meetings on platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. This initiative, which commenced on March 7, 2023, allows community members to witness policy discussions, expert testimonies, and decision-making processes in real-time, thereby promoting transparency and involvement in local governance. Council Chair Jani Hitchen noted that this move is part of the Council's ongoing commitment to open government, enabling citizens to stay informed without the necessity of attending meetings in person. The live streams are complemented by continued broadcasts on Pierce County TV, ensuring accessibility for a wider audience. Residents are encouraged to participate in the legislative process, whether by attending meetings in person at the Council Chambers or engaging remotely through the Council's website.

Council Vice Chair Paul Herrera emphasized the importance of public feedback in shaping legislation, asserting that understanding community perspectives is crucial for effective governance. This initiative not only facilitates better communication between the Council and constituents but also sets a precedent for other local governments to follow. Overall, the live streaming of committee meetings represents a progressive step towards a more inclusive and transparent governance model in Pierce County.
