Art unites Tacoma and Ukraine

Tacoma, WALocal News

The "Peace Begins with Art" exhibition, held at Tacoma’s STAR Center on January 11, features over 70 artworks created by students from Tacoma and Brovary, Ukraine, each expressing their vision of peace amidst the backdrop of war. Organized by Tacoma Sister Cities and member Iuliia Didkivska, the event highlights the resilience of young artists affected by conflict. The exhibition includes a moving video presentation of Brovary students, demonstrating their creative spirit despite the challenges presented by ongoing violence. Didkivska, who had to flee Ukraine in 2022, now works with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department to support immigrants and refugees, sharing her experiences and fostering community connections. The artworks serve as a powerful reminder of the impact of war on youth, capturing their hopes for a peaceful future.

As attendees engage with the pieces, they are encouraged to reflect on the significance of art as a medium for healing and understanding. The exhibition not only showcases talent but also aims to strengthen international relations and promote empathy across cultures. Through such initiatives, Tacoma continues to play a vital role in supporting global solidarity and artistic expression.
