Muskox Pretzel gets a companion

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium has successfully introduced Pretzel, a muskox from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, to Willow, a young calf born in September 2023. Recognizing the social nature of muskoxen, the zoo's animal care team aimed to provide Willow with a companion to enhance her well-being. Initially, Willow was kept separate due to size differences, with her father Hudson weighing around 800 pounds, compared to Pretzel's 234 pounds and Willow's 350 pounds. The introduction process was meticulously planned, allowing the two muskoxen to become accustomed to each other through sight, sound, and scent before their official meeting. Observations show that the pair has begun to graze and explore together, adding vibrancy to their shared habitat.

The care team's efforts reflect a commitment to the animals' social needs, ensuring they thrive in a herd-like environment. As both animals grow, there are plans for them to share the Arctic Tundra habitat with their parents, Hudson and Charlotte. This initiative not only supports the muskoxen's well-being but also enhances the educational experience for zoo visitors.
