Downtown library prepares for grand opening

The downtown Tacoma Public Library is set to unveil its extensive renovations with a grand reopening on February 1, 2025, after being closed for upgrades since September 2023. Library Director Amita Lonial refers to the revamped facility as the "crown jewel" of the library system, aiming to cultivate a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors. The grand opening will feature performances from the Tacomarama Community Street Band, the Kareem Kandi World Orchestra, and various cultural dance groups, showcasing local talent and fostering community spirit. Throughout the day, attendees can participate in tours to explore the library's new features, including fresh paint, new carpeting, and improved lighting. The design emphasizes accessibility, with a new front station dedicated to issuing library cards and providing reference assistance.

Lonial expressed her hope that visitors will leave feeling joyful and connected to the library as a community hub. This reopening not only highlights the importance of public libraries but also reflects Tacoma's commitment to enhancing cultural and educational resources for its residents. The event marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to revitalize public spaces and engage the community.
