Seniors bid their center farewell

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Lighthouse Senior Center in Tacoma officially closed on January 31, 2025, marking the end of an era for many seniors who relied on its services. This closure follows the earlier termination of the Beacon Activity Center, which transitioned to serve young adults as the Beacon Youth Center. Seniors affected by these closures are now encouraged to participate in programs at the Eastside Community Center and People’s Community Center, designated as Parks Tacoma "Senior Hubs. " These centers offer an array of activities, including table games, arts and crafts, and nutritious meals, with a nominal fee for participation. Grace Morales, a dedicated meal provider for over 20 years, is committed to supporting seniors during this transition, reflecting the community's spirit of resilience.

The new centers aim to create a welcoming environment for seniors, ensuring they remain socially engaged. Meals will continue to be provided by local organizations, including Catholic Community Services and the Samoan Nurses Organization of Washington. This transition underscores the ongoing need for supportive community spaces for the aging population in Tacoma.
