Will this Pierce County forest turn into a mountain biking course? Heres what we know

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Gig Harbor community is engaging in a dialogue about the proposed addition of multi-use and dedicated mountain biking trails at McCormick Forest Park, a cherished local natural area. PenMet Parks has responded to overwhelming public interest in more walking and hiking trails by planning these developments, with an emphasis on maintaining environmental integrity. The existing trails, primarily old logging roads, are not optimized for mountain biking, prompting the need for improvements. While many residents support the initiative, others worry that increased mountain biking could harm the park's delicate ecosystem. PenMet Parks is dedicated to addressing these concerns, emphasizing the importance of community feedback in shaping the project.

The planning phase will commence in March, with a budget of $550,000 set for the trail enhancements. Park officials assure that public safety will be a priority during the design process, aiming to create an inclusive recreational environment. The involvement of the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance indicates a collaborative effort to balance the needs of various park users.
