A mini Point Ruston with 396 new homes, greenway planned in this Pierce County town

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Cove at Chambers Bay is poised to transform a 70-acre site in Steilacoom, previously home to the now-decommissioned Abitibi paper mill, into a vibrant mixed-use community. If approved, the project will introduce up to 396 residential units, including single-family homes and townhomes, alongside 15,000 square feet of commercial space. A 1,700-linear-foot greenway will enhance pedestrian and bicycle access, complemented by a new park, two internal roads, and upgraded stormwater infrastructure. Mayor Dick Muri emphasized the project's importance, noting that it is the last large-scale development opportunity in the town. This revitalization comes at a critical time for Steilacoom, which is facing budget cuts and seeks new revenue sources.

Public engagement is set to start soon, with a deadline for comments on February 26, and the planning commission will review the developer's applications for final approval by June. The Cove at Chambers Bay represents a significant step towards addressing housing needs in Pierce County while rejuvenating a long-neglected area. With the public process unfolding over the next several months, stakeholders are optimistic about the project's potential benefits.
