New football coaches introduced at Gig Harbor, Peninsula high schools

Tacoma, WALocal News

Gig Harbor and Peninsula high schools are poised for a transformative football season as they introduce new head coaches. Jeff Scoma, formerly the head coach at Stanwood High School, will take over the Gig Harbor Tides, succeeding Darrin Reeves, who stepped down after the 2024 season. Scoma is credited with revitalizing the Stanwood program, leading them to back-to-back state tournament appearances and significantly increasing student participation. Across town, Clay Mauro has been appointed head coach at Peninsula High School, stepping up from his role as an assistant under longtime coach Ross Filkins, who led the program for three decades. Mauro brings valuable experience from coaching in the competitive 5A leagues of Nevada, where he previously served as head coach at Green Valley.

Both coaches are expected to implement innovative strategies to enhance team performance and engagement. Their appointments signal a new era for both schools, with a focus on building strong football programs. As these changes unfold, the local community eagerly anticipates the upcoming season.
