Trail upgrades in Pierce County that prioritize pedestrians, bikers and nature

Tacoma, WALocal News

In Pierce County, recent trail upgrades are reshaping outdoor recreational opportunities by prioritizing safety for pedestrians and cyclists. A significant $16 million bridge extension has successfully linked King and Pierce Counties, expanding a popular trail to 22 miles. This new span not only enhances accessibility but also serves as a vital emergency route should the state Route 410 bridge face damage. The region's commitment to sustainable transportation is evident in these initiatives, which are in response to the increasing demand for outdoor activities in the South Sound area. Moreover, the future spuyaləpabš Trail will connect Tacoma, Puyallup, and Fife, paying tribute to the Puyallup Tribe's heritage.

As part of the ongoing efforts, local parks, such as Orangegate Park, are temporarily closed for upgrades to improve trail connectivity. By investing in these projects, Pierce County is fostering a healthier, more active community while promoting environmental stewardship. These developments not only enhance local infrastructure but also encourage residents to engage with the natural beauty of the region.
