County Executive Ryan Mello described this initiative as a pivotal moment for the community, emphasizing the potential to create long-term solutions for youth homelessness. The challenge kicks off on February 5, 2025, at a community event where local leaders and residents will brainstorm actionable strategies. Mello pointed out a dramatic 140% rise in youth homelessness over the past six years, highlighting the urgent need for community involvement. He also noted that many affected youths experience underreported homelessness, including couch-surfing and other forms of instability.

By addressing these issues, Pierce County aims to tackle not only housing but also the systemic problems contributing to youth homelessness, including discrimination against LGBTQ youth and domestic violence. The initiative represents a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all young people in the region.
