Republican Senate leaders bill would convert The Evergreen State College into a UW campus

Tacoma, WALocal News

Senate Republican Leader John Braun has introduced a transformative bill aimed at converting The Evergreen State College into a University of Washington Health Sciences Campus, set to take effect on July 1, 2026. This legislative initiative is designed to mitigate the escalating healthcare workforce shortage affecting Washington, with Braun emphasizing the necessity to adapt educational resources to meet the changing needs of the population. Currently, Evergreen's enrollment has dwindled to about 2,500 students, a stark contrast to its peak of nearly 5,000, prompting concerns about the college's viability and financial sustainability. The proposed legislation seeks to redirect state funding to train vital healthcare professionals, including registered nurses and paramedics, in response to the anticipated surge in medical needs due to the aging population. While the college's administration has refrained from commenting on the bill, they acknowledge a recent uptick in undergraduate enrollment.

Braun believes this transition would not only honor Evergreen's legacy but also align educational offerings with the pressing demands of the state's healthcare system. The bill has been assigned to the Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, where it will undergo further scrutiny. If enacted, this proposal could reshape Washington's educational framework and significantly enhance healthcare access for its residents.
