Republican Senate leaders bill would convert The Evergreen State College into a UW campus

Tacoma, WALocal News

Senate Republican Leader John Braun has introduced a bill that proposes the transformation of The Evergreen State College into a University of Washington Health Sciences Campus, effective July 1, 2026, to combat Washington's healthcare workforce shortage. Citing a significant drop in student enrollment from nearly 5,000 in 2009-2011 to around 2,500 currently, Braun argues that Evergreen's relevance in its current form is diminishing. The legislation aims to redirect state resources towards training essential healthcare roles, such as registered nurses and nurse practitioners, to meet the growing demand for medical services. Despite a slight increase in Evergreen's enrollment this past fall, Braun insists that the college's historical significance must evolve to align with modern healthcare needs. The bill outlines a comprehensive plan for the new campus, including the appointment of a chancellor, a review of existing programs, and the establishment of a financial sustainability plan.

Braun asserts that this shift represents a necessary investment in the health of Washingtonians, as the state faces significant spending challenges. He emphasizes the need for educational institutions to perform at a high level and adapt to the pressing healthcare demands of the population. The proposed transformation reflects a strategic response to the anticipated "Silver Tsunami" of aging residents requiring medical care.
