Ongoing challenges mean road work will be prolonged on this busy Pierce County street

Tacoma, WALocal News

Delays in road work on Spanaway Loop Road South in Pierce County are extending closures that were initially scheduled to end in January. The closure affects segments between Garfield Street South and 116th Street South, particularly near Pacific Lutheran University, with a detour established through alternate routes. The Pierce County Planning and Public Works department has acknowledged the frustration among motorists and appreciates their ongoing patience while they address several challenges related to replacing aging infrastructure. The Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor Phase 4 project, which is budgeted at $18. 9 million, is primarily funded by sewer utility construction funds coming from connection charges and service fees.

While sidewalk work for the project concluded in September, the critical grinding and paving phase is on hold until early spring 2025. Residents can expect additional travel disruptions once this phase begins, and the county has committed to providing updates regarding the timeline and impacts. This infrastructure project aims to enhance the overall functionality of the road and improve safety for drivers. Continued communication with the public is planned to keep them informed as the project evolves.
