Construction to Delay Refill of Popular Pierce County Lake This Year

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Cascade Water Alliance has announced a delay in the refill of Lake Tapps, moving the expected date from mid-February to approximately March 15. This change is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction efforts in collaboration with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, aimed at replacing a 100-year-old diversion structure. Water resources manager James Amspacher explained that the new infrastructure will feature an automated gate to improve water quality and prevent sediment accumulation.

Residents who utilize lower winter water levels for maintenance and recreation will be notably affected by this delay. Cascade Water Alliance is optimistic about reaching a reservoir level of 541. 5 feet by April 15, although this is dependent on both construction progress and the White River's water levels. Lake Tapps is a well-frequented summer destination, leading to increased parking restrictions in previous years due to crowd control issues. Col.

Kathryn Sanborn from the Seattle District of USACE emphasized the project's benefits for both the community and the Corps. The Cascade Water Alliance, owning the reservoir since 2009, plans to use Lake Tapps as a future municipal water supply.
