Enough is enough. Point Ruston merchants group planning protest over issues at site

Tacoma, WALocal News

Merchants at Point Ruston are mobilizing for a peaceful protest on January 21, 2025, to address what they label as exploitative parking practices and poor site management that threaten local businesses. Scheduled from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m.

, the protest aims to raise public awareness and support for a vibrant community hub amid rising operational costs. The Waterfront Merchants Alliance issued a statement highlighting that recent changes in parking enforcement have further burdened local businesses, many of which struggle with new parking fees and lost validation options. Chyna Willman, president of the alliance, expressed frustration with the current situation, stating, “There’s nobody coming to save us,” and criticized the prioritization of profits over community welfare. The protest will see supporters filling parking spots throughout the day to symbolize collective resistance against unfavorable conditions. Additionally, the ongoing legal issues tied to the Point Ruston Owners Association exacerbate the merchants' challenges.

With parking prices now reaching $4 per hour and substantial penalties for violations, many local retailers argue that these changes hinder their competitiveness. The merchants are calling for a reevaluation of the management practices to foster a thriving retail environment.
