Ongoing challenges mean road work will be prolonged on this busy Pierce County street

Pierce County has announced that road work delays on Spanaway Loop Road South will extend the closure of affected sections due to ongoing sewer work challenges. Initially scheduled to reopen in January, the closure affects the stretch between Garfield Street South and 116th Street South, adjacent to Pacific Lutheran University. Detours are currently in place via Tule Lake Road South, State Route 7, and 112th Street South to ease traffic disruptions. The Planning and Public Works department has expressed appreciation for the community's patience and promised to provide further updates on the project's timeline. The Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor Phase 4 project, which is integral to the infrastructure improvements, has a budget of $18.

9 million, sourced from sewer utility construction funds. Earlier sidewalk work for the repaving project was completed in September, but the grinding and paving phase is on hold until early spring 2025. As the project progresses, additional travel impacts are expected, with more information to be provided as it becomes available.
