Remember when glass collected in Tacoma went to the landfill? Recycling is back

Tacoma, WALocal News

Tacoma has officially resumed its glass recycling program, partnering with the Portland-based company Glass to Glass to ensure that collected glass is sent to recycling plants once again. The city had to pause its recycling efforts in September 2024, directing collected glass to landfills due to unfavorable market conditions affecting its previous processor, Strategic Materials Inc. After a comprehensive analysis of environmental and economic factors, the change is set to take effect on January 2, 2025. Five drop-off locations have been established across Tacoma, including the Tacoma Recycle Center. City officials express optimism that this new partnership will restore community confidence in glass recycling and encourage greater participation.

The resumption of glass recycling is crucial for reducing waste and promoting environmental sustainability. Lewis Griffith, the city's Solid Waste Division manager, emphasized their commitment to providing reliable recycling options, addressing local waste management needs while reflecting broader trends in recycling and environmental responsibility.
